Impulse Control Disorders

Impulse Control Disorders are specific impulsive behaviors that can be harmful to yourself or others.  In these disorders, you are often unable or find it hard to resist performing harmful impulsive act or behaviors. These behaviors are not performed intentionally.  In fact, in most cases, the person suffering from these disorders has little or no control over their impulsive actions.  The impulsive behaviors can include violent, sexual, gambling, fire starting, stealing, and self-injurious (cutting, etc.) behaviors.

When a person is suffering from uncontrollable impulses, their life can be turned upside down.  Likewise, their loved ones often suffer significant harm related to those impulsive actions.  Consequences to acting on these impulses can include legal, educational, relationship, health, and social problems.

If you or a loved one suffers from any of the disorders that are associated with impulse control problems, you know how difficult it can be.

But, there is hope!  Therapeutic interventions can create lasting change and healing.
